A Little Ray of Hope

I'm not a particularly religious person.

I do hold rather long conversations with God at times, usually when I'm upset or frustrated, but I do not go to Church and I'm not entirely sure that God actually fits the personality and characteristics we've given him i.e. male etc.

That isn't to say I'm not a spiritual person, I definitely believe in things having a balance and needing harmony.  I believe that there might be something out there and if there is it doesn't necessarily take the form that we've prescribed.  I also believe, whole heartedly, that some of us are just a tad more sensitive to certain forces and energies than others are and personally I'm rather glad of it - wouldn't the world be incredibly dull if we were all 'in-tune' with nature and therefore the same?

The reason I'm talking about spirituality and forces and things being in balance is that for a long time I've been out of balance.  My equilibrium has been jangled and broken and discordant for .... do you know what?...it doesn't matter how long, the point is I was broken.  I'm not for one moment suggesting that I'm fixed and back to what - who - I was before I was broken, no, I have a long way to go yet but I am on the road to recovery.  I can (kind of) accept that I am never going to go back to the person that I was before, how can I when I've changed and my experiences have helped shape me?  Besides, any one who has day dreamed about a time machine to go back in time will no there is never any going back.  It denies progress and all that it stands for. The trying to go back to what/who you were before, not the time machine. Obviously.

To get back to my point on spirituality today I feel much better in myself, more positive, lighter I suppose.  I've been stressing endlessly for too long about many things, more recently about getting a job to share the financial burden, getting my personal statement done for my PGCE application, who I was going to ask to be referees, submitting it, waiting to find out if they like me enough to invite me to interview, the interview itself, how I was going to find £9k for tuition fees...plus a whole host of other things that I could reel off the top of my head but I'm not!

My feeling better could be put down to a number of things:
  1. I've just had one hours worth of Reflexology (will blog about this later, if I remember)
  2. Have come to a trade agreement with the practitioner where we trade treatment for my organisation and administration skills - yipppeeee)
  3. I've completed the first draft of my personal statement for help from others in editing, what works and what doesn't etc
  4. I have the names of 2 people who are happy to provide me references
and this last one definitely gave me reason to smile

      5.  A cheque for nearly £500 came to me as a tax rebate!

For the first time in long time I have hope.

So, God in whatever form or shape he/she/it chooses to take...something somewhere sent me that cheque when it - and hope - were needed most. That cheque is going to be paid in to my bank and swiftly transferred to my savings account, where it is going to stay, untouched.

Now to work on the rest of the £8,500 I need!

Day 29 Something You Hope to Change About Yourself. And Why.

I hope to change the way I seem to store up hurt.

I find it incredibly difficult to let go of hurt and get over it, which means the healing process takes forever. And that is SO tiresome.

Apart from being tiresome it also gets in the way of everything...happiness, laughter, life in general.

So if I could change anything it would be to get over things quicker and get on with...stuff, like living and life.

Oh and I'd also like to be slimmer and taller. I know the question or day of truth was 'something you hope to change' meaning something that is possible but I just thought I'd throw that out there. And it is my blog so I can do what I want.

Day 26 Have You Ever Thought About Giving up on Life? If so, When and Why?

Well, there's no easy way to say this but yes, yes I have.

I have gone to bed, in the past, and not wanted to wake in the morning. But I have never thought about taking that desire in to my own hands.

When and why? *big deep sigh* err well I felt besiged on all sides by everything and like all the most important people in my life had abandoned me in my time of need.

Simply phrased I couldn't see a light at the end of the tunnel. I couldn't talk about how I felt - and even if I could there was no one for me to turn to - I didn't know how to get myself out of what I'd got myself in to.

In the space of 18 months here's what I went through;
  1. I moved house
  2. Started a new job in a new area in a company where the women I worked with make me ashamed to be female
  3. My husband went away for 4 months
  4. My husband came back and had shit to deal with at work - people making his life hell and trying to damage his career
  5. I fell out with my mum over getting married
  6. I fell out with my sister over getting married
  7. I fell out with the rest of my family over getting married
  8. I got married on a Saturday, any way (see stubborn)
  9. I buried my nan on the following Monday
  10. My husband's grandfather was diagnosed with cancer
  11. I started my Masters
  12. I moved house again
  13. My husband went away, again
  14. His grandfather died
  15. We buried his grandfather
  16. I struggled with my Masters and rallied again conforming to the university's dictations on my writing style, topic and presentation (more examples of being me being stubborn)
  17. My husband went away, yet again
Oh and I failed my driving test 3 times as well in and between those above. I really am a good driver though;-)

And I was diagnosed with depression that I point blank refused - good thing or bad thing I don't know - to take anti-depressants for.

So, there you have it. The whole schbang.

Am I ashamed that I thought about and wanted to give in? A little yes. I don't do weakness and that's what I felt above and beyond all else. Weak and pathetic and like a better person would have coped.

Day 06 Something You Hope You Never Have To Do.

I could be lighthearted about this one and say something like I hope I never have to deal with a child's snotty and snot encrusted nose yuck. I am gagging just thinking about it...er nice, but that would be just me trying to avoid answering a difficult question.

I've been staring at this is blank page for the best part of half an hour trying to think of all the things I hope I never have to do; experience having to watch a loved one die in great pain and suffering, sing on stage in front of people (you'd thank me profusely for that one), plunge/unblock a toilet, touch a slug (that one is genuine, snot I can just about deal with but slugs...absolutely not).

All of those are legitimate things that I sincerely do hope I never have to do but not what I am avoiding voicing or admitting to. I'm using humour again to deflect from my discomfort at having to answer something which not only makes me apprehensive and uneasy but sits in the pit of my stomach bringing on the fight or flight response.

The answer to this question is the one thing I have stressed endlessly and most consistently about for the last two or more years, from it have come all my nightmares, the majority of my tears and my mood swings. I don't want to say it out loud, I don't want to have to commit it to paper in case just saying it and reading it there in indelible ink (metaphorically speaking) means I have to finally face up to it, analyse it and myself and ... then face the undeniable. I don't want to have my worst fears confirmed, and in my warped rationale while I am in denial and a coward not only do I not have to do that I can also cling to complete confidence in them not being true. I can hide from them and pretend they don't exist and I can hope that - given time - they will just disappear by themselves. May be my fears only amount to something bad - in my eyes - because of the way I am mis-joining the dots of my thoughts and feelings. May be the picture I see is distorted and discordant because I haven't joined things up properly or in the right fashion, may be I would see more clearly and may be the picture would be ... less scary if I rearranged them one at a time. May be the formula I am using is all wrong, may be worst fears + horrible gut wrenching reaction doesn't = proof of fears, therefore the end of my world as I know it. Huh, makes complete sense when I phrase it like that ... and I do feel a little better ... but ... what if I am right? What if all that rearranging and re-organising does nothing but make it impossible to hide? What then?

So to be entirely cryptic something I hope I never have to do is face my worst fears and have them confirmed. Sorry but I am still not ready to name and deal with this one yet.

Hope

I find myself in the unusual position of having picked a title (a very appropriate one) but I don’t know where to begin and usually it’s the reverse – I start writing and a title comes to me after.

But I digress titles, topics and the writing process aren’t on my mind this evening. Love and hurt and stress are. Yet another tangled ball of past, present and future angst all entwined with confusion, uncertainty and fear.

I don’t know how to describe the place that I am in now other than to say something is slightly...amiss, although this doesn’t feel like the right word. I’m no longer in the grey area of no man’s land where nothing lives and nothing can survive, but I’m not yet out in the lush fields of plenty either.

My marriage to my husband didn’t begin under the best circumstances. Aside from the troubles I was experiencing with my mum, my older sister, the middle one, and I were at loggerheads. We’ve always had a turbulent relationship, fiery, passionate and volatile - we can be the best of friends and the worst of friends. My sister once upset me so much with the things she said to me that I didn’t talk to her for four months. I stayed hurt and angry, although I was mostly angry for that entire period. She knows where the chinks in my armour are and how to exploit them like she made the suit herself.

Although the way she behaved on my wedding day hurt more than I can find the words to describe, I can understand. I can see why my sister didn’t hug me that day, I can see why she didn’t congratulate me or wish me every happiness and I can see why she didn’t write in our wedding book or get us a card. I can see why she didn’t want any part of the day I spent trying on dresses and shopping for one. I can understand these things because I made her react like that, I made her lash out and want to hurt me. It was a ripple effect. There was, not matter what my intent, a certain degree of deliberate hurt inflicted. It was selfish of me to get married before her when she had been planning her wedding, her big day for 18 months. I know that. It wasn’t a decision I made lightly, and in my defence I did have mitigating circumstances. However given the choice...now...again...I’d still make the same one. Despite knowing how complicated things would get, how much people would be hurt and the extent that that hurt would taint everything, I would still do it.

For a long time I wasn’t sure, wasn’t sure that I would make the same decision again. I wasn’t sure that I could. It was hard for me to look at my husband and not see all that hurt and the damage done to my relationship with my family. I found it difficult to separate him and my feelings for him from those I had for my family and all that had happened. I looked at him and I no longer saw the happy memories that we had made together, or all the good times that we had shared. I no longer saw just love, my love, for him. The harder I tried to see just that and nothing else the more it evaded me and the more this made me panic and doubt. At its worst point my husband would go away and I would start to relax, stop searching for things – emotions, certainty, evidence of love and surety – but then as the time approached for him to return I began to not want him to. It seemed to me that he brought with him all measure of turbulent emotions and immense confusion.

Throughout all of this I never once felt that leaving him was the answer. Somehow and from somewhere within me I knew that if I just waited long enough time would set things right. That something turned out to be hope, I just didn’t know it. I know it now though.

Spring Cleaning

We all go through difficult periods in our lives. We experience things which test our resolve and shake the foundations of our world with epic proportion. As painful as such experiences are they are an essential part of life and spiritual growth, and admittedly while I do not find any comfort in that at present I will respectfully bow my head and accede there is truth in it. I find it hard to believe people suffer only for the sake of suffering and for no other purpose; some things just hurt too much and wreak too much debilitating devastation for there to be no lesson to be learnt from it. My mum as often told me ‘Things always happen for a reason’ and I believe I am coming round to this way of thinking, however slowly.

When I was younger if something was on my mind and I had a problem which needed to be solved – it was usually something internal that I needed to work out for myself – I would change things around in my bedroom. I would in effect spring clean my room in an attempt to spring clean myself spiritually. Some how by moving all of my furniture in to the hall way, usually involving a great deal of pushing and shoving and sheer stubborn determination to move it (I have never gone in for small pieces, the bigger, sturdier, heavier and older it was the more secure I felt) I could physically sort through all my belongings and see what I was going to keep and what I was ready to let go of. Regardless of the weather I would tie back my curtains, throw open the windows and prop open my bedroom door so that the wind could blow and carry away with it the cobwebs of my unneeded past.

I am sure mum loved coming up the stairs to find the top landing almost impassable and being more or less unable to get to the bathroom or to her bedroom. She would not say anything to me, no words of reprimand for the mess I was creating or the dust I was disturbing (I have always had dust fairies living with me, they keep me company and make leaving messages to surprised readers fun). She would survey the piles of clothes, cosmetics, cuddly toys, the mounds of books and folders from school and college and my various bags all heaped in barring disarray and carefully pick her way around it all. She would not even raise an enquiring eyebrow because she knew it was some thing I had to unravel and reorganise by myself. She knew that maybe after a few days when I had straightened things out for myself and in my own mind, there was every possibility I would go to her to talk it over, explaining and learning from it all.

It would take me hours, a whole day to go through everything I owned and to decide whether to keep it. Often what would happen is that I had stumble across an item - a letter, a toy, a top, a card, a near empty bottle of perfume, a photo – that would unleash a memory. It would prompt me to take a few moments to relive that moment or moments and I would be assailed by all that accompanied it; the tears, the laughter, the touches, the conversations ... all bittersweet. Holding it in my hand I could feel the physical and emotional weight of it, I could feel the impression it left on me inside. The heavier it felt within me the more inclined I was to set it aside to bury again for a little bit longer. Somehow I would just know that I was not quite ready to deal with it all yet but that it was only a matter of time until I could. I am not sure what made me know this or be so sure of it, instincts maybe, but I would know it somewhere inside myself. The more demanding the memory and the feelings evoked, the more difficult to fulfil or cope with, the more burdensome or oppressive it was the more I understood that the time was not right and I was not ready to let go of it yet , a longer spell was needed before I could.

Gradually as I worked through the physical trappings and markers of my life everything would be arranged into neat piles; things to stay and be displayed, things to buried in that Pandora’s box in the bottom of a cupboard or wardrobe for another time, things to be donated to others, things to be thrown away and let go of. Next would follow the herculean task of designating the things that I chose to keep with me a place, a home for them to reside for a period of time. Some items I would want to see on a regular basis as a reminder of my life so far, of love, of pain and understanding, of experiences shared and growth, of happiness and sadness, of humility, of pride and lastly but perhaps more importantly of hope. Other things I really would need to put in a box, securing the lid as tightly as I could before hiding it away underneath my hanging clothes in a dark corner. The memories and the hurt encased by four sides and a lid of cardboard were just too raw, too full of anguish, of sorrow and searing hurt that went too deep to be faced with on a daily basis. I guess then growing up I had not yet learnt the sadistic habit of surrounding myself with my hurt so that I could regularly reopen wounds just as they were healing.

The disarray and havoc I unleashed for a whole day on the top of our house was a part of my own journey. It was a part of me stamping my own identity on those four walls, of choosing what to display to others and thinking of what it might say about me and if I was ready to reveal that much. It was about taking stock of the things that were happening in my life and around me and making up my own mind about them. It was about determining my own feelings through how I dealt with things and how I reacted to them. While sorting through my belongings afforded me the chance to rearrange the physical trappings of my life and to make way for new things it was, more importantly, a way of doing the same mentally and emotionally. My hands and my mind would be busy feeling the weight of objects at the same time as my heart would be feeling the weight of the emotion that tied me to it. My heart was in the process of spring cleaning my soul and ridding me of things that prevented me from being able to continue to grow. I could not move on and progress until I had freed myself of the burdens of memories and feelings that kept me rooted in a place that I longer fitted in.

In short, those four walls became a reflection of my life so far, of the path I had trod and the pitfalls along the way, but more poignantly it reflected how I had been shaped. Ultimately those walls became a reflection of the new me. Rearranging my belongings was not merely a part of me growing up, or of getting to know myself, but of coming to terms with the knowledge life has a way of letting you know there are experiences that you need to go through and that there are lessons to be learnt. It is a bittersweet thing to concede that there is a measure of knowledge in life that can only be acquired by living through something alone, through accepting understanding can not come through the advice and words of another.

By the end of the day when I changed my bed linen, bathed and crept into the comfort of my bed surrounded by my new outlook and reflection, I would feel unburdened, purged if you will. A contentedness would suffuse my inner world and hope would return to nest until I had a need to go through the process again.

I think – for I am not sure given that it is always three steps forward one back on this journey – that I have begun to spring clean. Tentatively, I say that I believe I am beginning to immerge from my chrysalis, changed and having metamorphosed into a new version of myself. I no longer have as many physical things and belongings to go through as I did, perhaps that is why I find it so much harder to purge now. Perhaps I am not sure because I have yet to learn how to go through the whole process emotionally. Perhaps because I have nothing to physically discard I can not let go of the emotions, perhaps moving forward is a matter of learning how. I don’t know for certain. This could be yet another time in which I take three steps forward with one to be taken backwards lurking somewhere on the horizon, but I know that I long for spring. I long for the scent of freshness, for the faint promise of warmth and summer behind the bracing wind wafting through my open windows. I long for the fleeting appearance of the sun in the sky while the birds chirrup. I long for the crocuses and daffodils to remind all with the brightness of their blooms of easier climes to come.
